Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan is and will probably remain his best work for now. Overall its a movie that is watchable, but it wont leave you awestruck and you will probably forget it as soon as you're out of the cinema hall. Since most Bollywood films lack a strong script, a good many people decided to give this movie a miss not expecting much. And then they showed the songs with its strange costumes, and one was left wondering.is this really Mohenja om 2000 years back? And what is this movie about?.is it a period drama?.The trailer surely confused the viewers and they didn't know what to expect. I remember how I felt when I first saw the trailer.the first thing that came to my mind as I watched the trailer is that this movie is going to be a disaster. The opening shot of Hrithik with the crocodile and the bad VFX here destroyed the films credibility. WHAT KILLED IT: I think the trailer really destroyed the movie. There's absolutely nothing here that we haven't seen earlier. Nor are the actions sequences pictured any differently. The establishing shot of the city of Mohenja Daro doesn't do justice to its historical greatness. 5) Cinematography: There's absolutely no passion in the camera work or lighting.

The music has to belong to the movie and not be above it. Just like Hrithik is Hrithik in the movie, so is the music very AR Rehman. The music (except for the horns that blare every now and then) just doesn't evoke any feeling of a great civilization from two thousand years ago. His voice for one, just doesn't go with Hrithik's voice. And we don't need AR Rehman to sing for every film that he composes for. 4) Music: The music is good and so are the songs.but only to the ears.otherwise the score doesn't seem to belong to that era. Filmmakers need to get better with their scripts with intelligent twists and turns. 3) Story: Halfway through the movie (or maybe even earlier for some) its easy to guess where the movie is headed and what the end is going to be. The dialogues should have been sharper and more intelligent. Kabir Bedi looks intense but hasn't been presented well enough. And the character needs to be above the persona of the actor. We need more subtlety and need to do away with over exaggerated expressions. The acting of Hrithik, Arunoday Singh (Moonja) and some other lead actors leaves much to be desired. A macho should be macho throughout.much like the character of Russell Crowe in Gladiator. Especially when he's wooing his lady love. His character in this movie is presented as fearless and strong but turns into a clown every now and then. Since then, all Bollywood masala flicks cash in on his looks, physique and dance skills. The only movie where Hrithik was not Hrithik and instead a character was in Koi Mil Gaya. The characterization is weak and its the director who fails here. 2) Actors & Acting: The character of Sarman (Hrithik) is just like Hrithik in every other movie. The actors should have looked more rough and weather beaten for the time period the film depicts.

People in general looked very well groomed and the women folk, especially the lead actress seems to have smooth flowing hair with curls just as if she's stepped out of a parlor. The language had to be Hindi for obvious reasons, but the costumes and make up (especially hair) didn't look like they were from 2016 BC. WHAT DOESN'T WORK: 1) Costumes & Makeup: What irritates is the lack of attention to detail with costumes, make up and dialect. Definitely not at par with some Hollywood heavyweights but still nothing stands out like a sore thumb. The town looks good and the vfx here is good too. Mohenja Daro.of all times and civilizations? Why? WHAT WORKS: What works for the movie is its sets. This story would have worked in any kind of kingdom in India a few hundred years back. The movie needn't have gone back as far as 2000 BC to tell the story it tells. Its quite evident that the director is greatly inspired by period flicks and you see several elements borrowed from Hollywood hits like Gladiator and Troy. It could have been a great movie if not for the flaws that stand out and keep it from becoming a classic. Its made well and has a story that doesn't bore you but its still a love story like every other Bollywood film. Not as bad as the negative publicity makes it out to be.
